Why shard discipline matters more than shard quantity
Every hero in the database has a star-level shard cost that increases steeply at higher stars (see the Hero Gear & Shard Calculator for exact numbers by rarity). Free players who split shards across four or five heroes they like the look of end up with several heroes stuck at low star levels — none of which perform meaningfully better than an unleveled version. Concentrating shards on fewer heroes gets you further, faster.
Priority order for F2P accounts
- Zoe (Gen 2, Legendary, Infantry) — the clearest F2P garrison investment in the game. Her damage reduction and crowd control keep her relevant defensively well past her own generation, often into Gen 5-6 territory with the right support.
- Marlin (Gen 2, Legendary, Archer) — a genuine long-term carry for both PvE and PvP. The shard cost curve rewards patience rather than quick pulls, so treat him as a multi-week save, not an impulse spend.
- Chenko (Gen 1, Epic, Cavalry) — frequently the best rally joiner available to F2P accounts, and cheap relative to legendary heroes since he's Epic rarity. A strong first investment before you can realistically reach legendary-tier shard costs.
- Yang (Gen 6, Legendary, Archer) — the F2P community's answer to the late-game power curve. Reachable through events, alliance activity, and daily play without spending, but he's a Gen 6 hero, so plan to start banking shards toward him from roughly Gen 5 onward.
What about everyone else?
Most other heroes fall into one of two buckets: VIP/spend-gated (like Amadeus — strong, but access requires VIP progression that in practice means paying to reach quickly) or generation-specific fillers that get outclassed once the next generation ships. Full role-by-role breakdowns, including garrison, Bear Hunt and rally-joiner ratings for every hero, are on the tier list and each hero's own detail page.
If you do spend gems, the VIP spending priority guide is the companion to this page — VIP does not replace shard discipline. Exclusive widgets still belong on the same hero; see the F2P gear path.
